Eyes On Robert, 2019

Static CGI, rendered in 3D software, printed.

Eyes On Robert consists of three CGI works that were inspired by the work of Robert Mapplethorpe. One of the main characteristics of Mapplethorpe’s work, besides the obvious, is the sensitivity it captures. His subjects are depicted as strong and confident yet incredibly soft and vulnerable at the same time. These still images aim to explore a range of emotions that, still to this day, often feels absent in the portrayal of men and masculinity. The depictions raise the question: why did so many consider Mapplethorpe’s work to be obscene? Perhaps not because of its homoerotic explicitness but instead due to its revelation of emotional capacity, embodied by men.

The works were part of the identically titled exhibition Eyes On Robert at Melkweg Expo in Amsterdam. In this group exhibition, 8 artists were invited to create new works inspired by the work of Robert Mapplethorpe. Other participants of Eyes On Robert were Ari Versluis, Dustin Thierry, Dylan van Vliet, Ferry van der Nat, Henri Verhoef, Martijn Mendel and Vytautas Kumza.
